Tomorrow begins 2 full days of homeschool parents coming together to sharpen one another, find supplies for next year and have some fellowship.
The Annual Homeschool Convention
We just wrapped up our first year of homeschooling. Yes we did! I tell most of my public accounting friends, we just drove right into the deep end with our freak flag!
It's amazing how many people think that homeschooling is the most ABSOLUTE Dumbest idea in the world! Seriously - in the world!
Coming from a very worldly background, party life-style (before Jesus), and a career as a CPA (on the partner track), people almost FALL over in shock when I tell them. The look on their face is priceless! I wish you could see it! :)
Tell me how you handle people questioning your sanity in homeschooling?
Share what you got at and from the convention or what treasures did you find?
by the way, hands down - best year I have spent in my life - 2007-2008!

We've had it really easy when it comes to people finding out that we homeschool. Our families support us. My sister just joined in a few months ago, too, as a homeschooling mom. She's been doing it while working full time and taking college classes. (Amazing. I would have had a really hard time.) Homeschooling is becoming so well known that I'm surprised people are shocked to find out that your family is doing it. Congratulations on your first year of home education. It strengthens the family so much.
How wonderful - to have your sister along with you Shari!
I tell people that my primary reason for homeschooling is that I want an intimate relationship with my boys and I need extra time with them to accomplish this. Most people find it hard to argue with this. I think deep down everyone wants a closer relationship with their kids and I think even non-believers respect this being the motivation even if they woudn't choose homeschooling for their own family.
Shanna, I love this response! I will use it when I am home this summer!
You make me smile!
So? How was the convention? What did you gain from attending?
We began hs in an era that people didn't even know what it was! It was fun to see the evolution over time...now it's an acceptable (to most) form of alternative education and most people don't question the whys.
I'm with Shanna---and wouldn't trade the relationship we have with our kids for ANYTHING!
